Labiaplasty (sometimes referred to as labia minora reduction or labial reduction) is plastic surgery of the labia majora and/or the labia minora, which are the external folds of skin surrounding the vaginal entrance. The procedure is often done to reduce the size of the labia minora so that it does not extend past the labia majora. A labiaplasty can also fix issues with labia asymmetry as well as reduce extra folds of the clitoral hood. This procedure, performed by plastic surgeon, Dr. Eades, in Tucson, Arizona, not only improves the appearance of the vaginal area, even in clothes, but improves comfort and personal hygiene also.
For patients wishing to diminish the size and improve the appearance of their labia, labiaplasty can offer a solution. By reducing and altering shape or size, labiaplasty can provide relief for these patients. You may benefit from a labiaplasty if you wish to:
Before their procedure, it is important that patients designate a caregiver or helper to assist during recovery time. Caregivers should be able to drive patients home from the outpatient surgery center and provide assistance the first day after surgery. After a labiaplasty procedure, patients may leave the facility the same day the surgery is performed. After your procedure, Dr. Eades, as an experienced plastic surgeon, will explain wound care instructions and otherwise guide you through your recovery time.
Some soreness and swelling will be present for a few days. Pain and swelling can be managed by icing the area for 20 minutes on and off and keeping the bottom elevated. After symptoms fade, (around 4-5 days after surgery) patients can return to light activity. Most patients take a week off of work for their recovery. Women are asked to avoid tight clothing, sexual activity, and tampons for four weeks after their labiaplasty procedure. Most swelling will be greatly reduced within six weeks after labiaplasty, however, it could take six months for swelling to disappear completely.
One month following their procedure, many women will experience the full effects of their labiaplasty; they feel more comfortable, secure, and pleased with their body. After a labiaplasty procedure, the labia minora often does not extend lower than the labia majora. Patients are relieved of discomfort caused by the labia being too large and can wear fitted clothes more easily. Labiaplasty has a high satisfaction rate with over 90 percent of patients happy with their results.
A labial reduction, like most surgeries, is an important personal decision. Learning more about the procedure, results, and recovery, can help you make that decision.
